Wafaa Bilal was born June 10th, 1966 in Najaf, Iraq. He wanted to study art, but due to his family’s wishes, studied geography instead. In 1991, Bilal fled Iraq and went to Saudi Arabia to teach art to children. He later traveled to America, where he studied art at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and graduated with a BFA in 1999. Some of his works include Domestic Tension, 3rdi, and Canto III.
I found Bilal’s art to be really interesting. He used politics and social conflict as the main theme in his pieces, which is created on its own. However, what makes his distinctive, is that he uses himself and his identity as a topic. For example, In Domestic Tension, people could shoot at him with a paintball gun from over the internet.
